A 4-year-old video of former Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani removing the red beacon from his car is being falsely linked to his resignation.
A disturbing video showing a man vandalizing an idol inside a temple is circulating on social media with the claim that it is from Dhaka. The video is viral in the backdrop of communal violence that broke out in several parts of Bangladesh during the Durga Puja festivities
A Facebook user shared a post with a claim "Yet another Hindu temple attacked. In the central temple of Mirpur in Dhaka, a miscreant named Rashedul Hasan entered the main temple as Mithun Chakraborty to pray and dragged the idol to the ground and vandalized it,"
In our investigation, we found that the viral claim is misleading. The video is 2 years old and has nothing to do with the ongoing violence in Bangladesh.
After doing a related keyword search on Google, we found that the incident was covered by several news reports of Bangladesh in 2019.
According to a report, a young man has been arrested for vandalizing an idol at the Mirpur Central Temple in Dhaka. He was arrested and handed over to police on February 26th morning for allegedly vandalizing an idol while praying at a temple. He stood in front of the idol and prayed for about 10 minutes. As there was no one around, he went inside, dragged the idol down, and vandalized it. Hearing the sound of the idol falling, the assistant and cleaner of the priest inside ran and grabbed the young man. He was later handed over to the police.
Atindra Sarkar, an assistant to the priest at the temple, told Jago News, at first the young man introduced himself as Mithun Chakraborty but later he said that his name was Rashedul Hasan.
We also found the original news clip on a YouTube channel named “Ekattor TV" published on February 28, 2019. As per the description of the video a miscreant has vandalized the idol of Mirpur Central Temple. According to the temple authorities, around 7.15 am, a young man identified himself as Mithun Chakraborty who wanted to pray at the temple. Later, Kali stood for a while in the posture of prayer and threw away the idol. The priest grabbed him by the hand and handed him over to the police.
However, it is true that the incidents of violence have been reported from different parts of Bangladesh and Several puja venues were vandalized in the area of Chandpur, Chittagong, Gazipur, Bandarban, Chapainawabganj, and Moulvibazar. Attacks that began in Cumilla during Durga Puja have spread to other parts of Bangladesh and there are reports of violence, arson, and killing from several areas and cities.
In conclusion, it is clear though several incidents of violence have been reported from different parts of Bangladesh, this video is over two years old and not part of the ongoing violence in Bangladesh.
